Syngman Rhee’s documentary ‘The Founding War’ is an unusual success… Surpassed 180,000 in 10 days

(Seoul = Larose.VIP) Reporter Youngjae Lee = The number of people who visited theaters to see movies during the Lunar New Year holiday this year decreased by more than 400,000 compared to last year.

According to the integrated movie theater ticket network on the 13th, the total number of audiences over the four days (9th to 12th) of this Lunar New Year holiday was calculated to be 2,198,000.

The number of audiences showed an increase toward the latter half, with 429,000 on the 9th, the first day of the holiday, 527,000 on the 10th, Lunar New Year’s Day, 633,000 on the 11th, and 607,000 on the 12th.

Last year, the number of viewers during the four-day Lunar New Year holiday (January 21-24) was 2.633 million. Compared to last year, this year’s Lunar New Year holiday audience decreased by 434,000 (16.5%).

Analysis suggests that this result shows that the culture of enjoying content through online video services (OTT) at home rather than watching movies in theaters is becoming established.

Among the Korean films released targeting the Lunar New Year holiday, there were no works that could be called masterpieces, which also had an impact on the decrease in audience numbers.

Last year’s Lunar New Year holiday theater season was a competitive landscape between ‘Negotiation’ and ‘Ghost’, which had large production costs. ‘Negotiation’, which topped the box office at the time, attracted approximately 872,000 viewers over four days.

The Korean films ‘Dog Days’, ‘Deadman’, and ‘Picnic’, which were released simultaneously on the 7th just before the Lunar New Year holiday this year, are small to medium-sized films with a production cost of less than 10 billion won each.

‘Dog Days’ ranked 4th with over 200,000 viewers during the holiday season, followed by ‘Deadman’ (around 141,000 people) and ‘Picnic’ (over 136,000 people).

Movie 'Wonka'

Movie ‘Wonka’

The film that attracted the most audiences this Lunar New Year holiday was the Hollywood fantasy film ‘Wonka’ starring Timothée Chalamet, which was released on the 31st of last month and was viewed by over 750,000 people over four days.

‘Citizen Deok-hee’ starring Ra Mi-ran and Yeom Hye-ran ranked second with 458,000 viewers. Even though this movie was released on the 24th of last month, it showed its potential to keep up with the onslaught of new films.

What stands out most is the success of director Kim Deok-young’s documentary film ‘National Foundation War,’ which sheds light on the life and politics of former President Syngman Rhee.

This movie, which was released on the 1st, was viewed by 236,000 people during the Lunar New Year holiday, ranking third. The cumulative number of viewers reached 329,000. It is an unusual success for a documentary film.

On the last day of the holiday, Han Dong-hoon, chairman of the People Power Party’s emergency response committee, visited the theater to watch ‘National Foundation War’, drawing attention in the political world.

Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Yoo In-chon also watched the movie at the theater on the same day. After watching the movie, Minister Yoo said, “It is a film that allows you to clearly see the life of President Syngman Rhee, who played a big role in the birth of the liberal democratic nation of the Republic of Korea, and the historical reality leading up to the creation of the country. I hope many people will watch it.” .

The Hollywood spy action blockbuster ‘Argyle’, which was released two days before the Lunar New Year holiday, only drew 77,000 viewers during the holiday period and ranked 7th. Considering that director Matthew Vaughn received attention for directing the ‘Kingsman’ series, the performance fell short of expectations.
