(Seoul = Larose.VIP) Reporter Kim Jan-di = The Emergency Response Committee of the Korean Medical Association (KMA) decided to hold its first meeting on the 17th to discuss and decide on future struggle plans and roadmap for increasing the number of medical schools.

Kim Taek-woo, chairman of the medical association’s emergency committee, announced this plan at a press conference held on the afternoon of the 14th and said, “We will definitely block the government’s unreasonable push to increase the number of medical schools.”

In order to block the government’s expansion of medical schools, the Medical Association Representative Council held a general meeting of delegates on the 7th, formed an emergency response committee, and elected Kim Taek-woo, president of the Gangwon Provincial Medical Association, as chairman.

Chairman Kim pointed out that the government’s reason for increasing the number of medical schools is not reasonable, saying, “The government says that there is a shortage of doctors because the number of doctors per 1,000 people in our country is lower than the OECD average, but in reality, there is no phenomenon that occurs when there is a shortage of doctors.” .

He said, “Currently, the number of students in 40 medical schools is 3,000. If we increase the number of students by 2,000 at once, it is the same as creating 24 new medical schools.” He added, “The quality of education will decrease and it will become a black hole that sucks all the talented people in Korea.”

He then argued, “More than anything, the push to increase the number of people by 2,000 will lead to an increase in the burden of medical costs, which will be passed on to future generations.”

The Korean Medical Association Emergency Committee is composed of subcommittees such as the Struggle Committee, Organizational Strengthening Committee, External Cooperation Committee, and Media Publicity Committee, as well as the Legal Support Group and Comprehensive Administrative Support Group. We plan to finalize the composition of the emergency committee by the 16th.

Afterwards, it was decided to hold the first meeting on the 17th to discuss and decide on important matters, including specific struggle plans.

The Korean Medical Association has announced that it will prepare for collective action, such as a general strike, following the government’s announcement of its policy to increase the number of medical schools, but has not yet disclosed a specific response plan.

Chairman Kim also announced that he would focus on raising awareness of the irrationality of increasing the number of medical schools.

He said, “It is most important to inform the public about the problems of increasing the number of medical students by 2,000,” and added, “We plan to actively promote it to the public.”
