(Seoul = Larose.VIP) Reporter Kim Byeong-gyu and Seo Seong-ho = Vice Minister of Health and Welfare Park Min-soo announced that if residents go on strike against the expansion of medical schools, they will explore ways to fully expand non-face-to-face treatment and utilize PA (Physician Assistant) nurses.

Vice Minister Park appeared on MBC Radio’s ‘Focus’ on the 15th and said, “If there is a problem with the hospital’s function due to a strike by residents, etc., we will look for ways to utilize the existing workforce more.” He added, “We will fully expand non-face-to-face treatment.” “We will seek to enable PA support personnel to play a more active role,” he said.

He said, “We have prepared an emergency medical treatment response plan,” and “We have prepared all measures, including using emergency rooms using military hospitals, responding to the emergency system using public medical institutions, and expanding treatment hours by allowing existing personnel to spend a little more time, as much as possible.” “We will make sure there is no disruption to treatment,” he explained.

Regarding the collective action movement of doctors’ groups, Vice Minister Park said, “I believe that the basic mission of medical professionals will be respected as it is to save people’s health and lives,” and “The reason doctors exist is for patients, but they are trying to use patients as tools to carry out their wishes.” “I wish there were no more,” he emphasized.

Regarding the individual moves by some residents to resign, he said, “If it is planned in advance and resignations occur in succession and cause disruption to the hospital’s work, it can be considered a collective action.” He added, “Because an order has already been issued prohibiting the acceptance of resignation letters, the hospital “If it is judged to be collective, the acceptance of the resignation letter should be prohibited. If the resignation letter is not accepted, the legal obligation as a medical professional must be fulfilled,” he said.

Regarding the Korean Medical Association’s claim that the medical school quota issue was not discussed at the 28 medical issues consultative meetings held between the government and the medical community, Vice Minister Park said, “The Medical Association did not present numbers, but there was no discussion regarding medical school quota.” He pointed out, “I listened to opinions from all walks of life, but only the Korean Medical Association did not present numbers for (increased troops).”

He said, “We are not trying to solve the problem of essential medical care just by increasing the number of medical schools. We announced a four-major policy package for essential medical care, but this alone is not enough. We also need to increase the number of medical schools.”
