(Seoul, Sejong = Larose.VIP) Correspondents Go Yoo-seon and Kim Soo-hyun = As medical students started taking ‘allied leave of absence’ in protest against the government’s increase in medical schools, the Ministry of Education requested cooperation from each university to ensure normal academic operation.

The Ministry of Education announced on the 15th that it had sent an official letter to 40 medical schools across the country requesting cooperation in normal academic operation in preparation for medical students’ decision to take a leave of absence.

The Ministry of Education requested each university to comply with relevant laws and school regulations and strictly manage academic affairs to prevent students’ right to learning from being infringed.

He also asked students to clearly check the procedures and requirements according to school regulations when applying for a leave of absence.

In addition, he emphasized to the university to cooperate so that medical students can continue their studies without hesitation and the academic atmosphere is not clouded.

An official from the Ministry of Education emphasized, “Leaves of absence are broadly regulated in the Higher Education Act, and specific requirements are determined by school regulations, but allied leave of absence does not fall under the requirements for leave of absence under school regulations.”

He added, “The Ministry of Education has the authority to supervise each university, and can take action depending on whether or not there is a violation of school rules.”

Since it is against school regulations for a university to approve a leave of absence due to an alliance leave of absence, this means that the Ministry of Education can take administrative action against the university in this case.

The Ministry of Education said, “We will maintain a continuous collaboration system with universities and continuously check the situation to prevent students’ right to learning being violated due to group actions.”

Previously, fourth-year students at Hallym University Medical School announced that they would take a year-long leave of absence in protest against the government’s medical reform policies, such as increasing the number of medical schools.

The Korea Medical University and Graduate Medical School Student Association (KMA), which consists of students from 40 medical schools across the country, also decided to conduct a survey asking medical students across the country whether they would participate in the alliance leave of absence.

The Korea Medical University Association announced, “We plan to initiate an alliance leave of absence after making a final decision within a few days.”
