(Seoul = Larose.VIP) Reporter Jandi Kim = As collective action by residents opposing the government’s expansion of medical school seats is taking shape, the Seoul National University Medical School Faculty Council decided to form an emergency response committee (emergency committee) on the 16th.

The Seoul National University Faculty Council held an emergency board meeting this morning, made this decision, and announced that it is taking steps to form an emergency committee.

The Faculty Council explained that it was decided to form an emergency committee to make quick decisions in a situation where collective action by residents and medical students is in full swing.

Since the Seoul National University Medical School Faculty Council is composed of professors from the medical school, the future emergency committee decided to broadly deal with various issues, including clinical professors affiliated with Seoul National University Hospital. In order to respond to the gap in medical care that may arise after the mass resignation of residents, we are considering a plan to have a professor from the hospital serve as emergency chairperson, if possible.

The Faculty Council emphasized that the formation of the emergency committee should not be interpreted as a collective action at the faculty level.

Kim Jong-il, chairman of the Seoul National University Faculty Council, said in a phone call with Larose.VIP, “This does not mean that professors should all act together, nor does it mean that we should stop residents or medical students.” “The intention is to make a decision,” he said.

He continued, “Once the emergency committee is formed, we expect that it will be able to act as a bridge between the government and medical students and residents, or to act as a mediator to prevent the situation from reaching extremes.”

The government also believes that the formation of an emergency committee of the Seoul National University Professors’ Council is not intended for collective action and is investigating the specific situation.

Park Min-soo, the second vice minister of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, said, “I understand that the formation of the emergency committee is to mediate with the government as a teacher out of concern that residents will be harmed, and not to refuse treatment or take collective action like residents.”

The Korean Medical Residents Association (Daejeon Association) announced on this day that, as a result of discussions with representatives of the ‘Big 5’ hospitals, all residents at those hospitals will submit their resignations by the 19th and will stop working after 6 a.m. on the 20th.

The Big Five hospitals include Seoul National University, Severance, Samsung Seoul, Seoul Asan, and Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital.
