(Seoul = Larose.VIP) Reporter Hwang Jae-ha = “I didn’t act thinking of him as a villain. He’s just the same person. I think it happened that way because he had his own reasons.”

Lee Hee-jun, whom I met at a cafe in Jongno-gu, Seoul on the 16th, looked like Song Chon, a former detective and murderer from the recently released Netflix original drama ‘Murderer’.

In the drama, he looked like he was in his 60s with his hair cut short and his face was full of fine wrinkles, but he returned with a young face in his early 40s with neatly parted hair.

Lee Hee-jun confessed, “When I was first offered the role, I was so shocked that I asked, ‘Am I playing this grandfather?’ But as time passed, I was so excited.”

He continued, “I tend to get excited by challenges and difficult tasks,” and “I was excited about how to prepare. I am grateful to the director who gave me such a suggestion.”

Lee Hee-jun explained, “Songchon’s age is not specifically mentioned in the work, but I understood him to be around 65 years old,” adding, “It reminded me of the ‘fit old man who works out hard’ that can often be seen at mineral springs.”

Regarding the difficulty of acting as an old man, he said, “I thought it shouldn’t sound even the slightest bit artificial, as if I was trying to sound like an old man. Director Lee Chang-hee was very helpful. If it felt artificial, he delicately pointed it out and said, ‘Let’s film it again.'” He expressed his gratitude.

Songchon, who was created in this way, made a great performance in the second half of the work, episodes 5 to 8, giving off a strong impression. Because of the length and interesting narrative as the main character Lee Tang (played by Choi Woo-sik), some people said, ‘I don’t know who the main character is.’

‘Murderer’s Conundrum’ is a crime thriller about what happens when Lee Tang, a college student working part-time at a convenience store, accidentally commits murder, and detective Toy (Son Seok-gu), who has excellent intuition, chases after Lee Tang.

Lee Tang commits several accidental murders, and each time, it is revealed that the murdered victim was a conspicuous criminal who had been hiding his crime. Even though Yi Tang did not intend to, the traces of his crime accidentally disappear.

As this happens repeatedly, Yi Tang comes to believe that he has the ‘ability’ to recognize villains. The person who appears in front of Lee Tang is none other than the murderer Song Chon.

Songchon is a character who takes a path of crime after being betrayed by a colleague in the past, and commits a series of murders to rid the world of evil people. Songchon’s actions of brutally killing people in the name of punishing evil seem to show what lies at the end of Yitang’s path.

Lee Hee-jun said, “Songchon doesn’t seem to think of himself as a hero, and he seems to think that ‘even one of those pieces of trash needs to be eliminated.'” He added, “I felt a lot of ‘pity’ as I sympathized with Songchon. I felt sorry for Songchon. “I felt a lot of regret and compassion,” he explained.

Lee Hee-jun explained, “Song-chon is just the same person,” and “Song-chon was betrayed by a detective he trusted, and the shock from that must have been so great. I think that’s why he became even more twisted.”

However, Lee Heejun was wary of accepting Songchon’s actions positively. He said firmly, “I think this drama was created because we feel that there are many people who do bad things but escape the law, but we must not act like Song Chon.”

Lee Hee-jun, who has solidified his acting skills in short films and stage plays, recently appeared in Netflix films one after another with the films ‘Yellow Sea’ and ‘Murderer’s Disgust’. He is currently filming the Netflix series ‘Bad Love’, so he is busy enough to continue filming until 3 a.m. on the day of the interview.

Lee Hee-jun did not just walk on a solid path. He went through a period of obscurity with inconsistent profits, and in the process of concentrating on acting, he also suffered from panic disorder, and it is said that there was a long period of time where he wondered if he should quit acting.

When asked why he continues to act even though it is so difficult, Lee Hee-jun opened up and said, “One day, the CEO of Ganda Theater Company asked me, ‘Why do you like acting so much?’ and that was the first time I thought about it seriously.”

Heejun Lee explained, “I think understanding people is so much fun. The more I understand people’s psychology, the more fun it is and the more I become obsessed with it. I don’t think there’s anything more fun than that.”

“For example, how did Songchon become like this? We find the reason, sympathize with him, and observe the character. The process of understanding that, oh, this must have been the biggest wound for this character, is fun and warm. More than that. “I feel like there’s nothing interesting about it.”
