(Seoul = Larose.VIP) Reporter Kim Byeong-gyu = It has been confirmed that the infectious disease prevention information text message sent by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency to people entering the country from countries where infectious diseases are prevalent has been missing in large quantities for about four months.

According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency on the 16th, about 31,000 of the infectious disease prevention text messages that were supposed to be sent to inbound travelers over the past four months were delayed and sent to those eligible on the 15th.

The information text message that should have been sent immediately after entering the country was not sent, but was sent all at once as long as four months later.

An official from the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency said, “Out of 500,000 infectious disease prevention information text messages to be sent starting October 27 last year, 31,522 were not sent and were sent all at once. An error occurred in KT’s server, which is in charge of sending text messages. “It was sent out all together when the server restarted,” he explained.

In order to encourage voluntary reporting by those with symptoms, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency sends text messages containing information to people entering Korea from countries where infectious diseases have occurred, telling them to contact a call center or public health center instead of visiting a medical institution if they have symptoms.

The infectious diseases targeted for shipment are Ebola (2 countries), Lassa fever (1 country), plague (3 countries), and MERS (13 countries). Last year alone, 3.77 million information text messages were sent.

The number and period of transmission is 4 times in 21 days for Ebola, 1 time in 21 days for Lassa fever, 1 time in 1 day after entry for plague, and 4 times in 14 days for MERS.

Infectious disease prevention information text messages have also been used as a major quarantine tool in situations where there is a high risk of foreign infectious diseases such as MERS or Mpox (aka monkeypox) being imported into the country. In the case of MERS, which was introduced from overseas and spread in Korea in 2015, 186 people were confirmed and 38 deaths occurred.

Fortunately, there were no cases of these infectious diseases being imported from abroad during the period when the notification text message was omitted, but it is pointed out that there may have been a loophole in the infectious disease quarantine.

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency was unaware of the omission and the fact that it was sent in bulk, but when Larose.VIP reported, it belatedly began to investigate the cause.

Mr. A, who received the information text message all at once belatedly, told Larose.VIP, “I received the information text message three months after returning from the Middle East. When I contacted the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency’s call center, there were many calls saying they received this type of text message without a clear explanation.” “I only heard about it,” he said.
