(Seoul, Sejong = Larose.VIP) Reporter Go Yoo-seon and Kim Soo-hyun = When medical students showed collective action, such as taking a leave of absence, in protest against the government’s policy of increasing the number of students in medical schools, the Ministry of Education formed a situation response team and began responding.

On the 16th, the Ministry of Education established a ‘National University Hospital and Medical School Situation Response Team’ (within the Ministry of Education) to quickly identify and respond to situations related to collective action by medical school students, and started operating an emergency contact system with 40 medical schools nationwide from today. “We decided to regularly check student trends and measures at each university,” he said.

The day before, immediately after fourth-year students at Hallym University College of Medicine announced their policy of taking a leave of absence through social media (SNS), the Ministry of Education sent an official letter to medical schools across the country requesting that they submit data on the status of their students’ leave of absence by the 29th.

However, on the evening of the same day, representative students of the medical school held an emergency meeting and decided to submit an alliance leave of absence report on the 20th. As the situation became urgent, it is interpreted that the situation response team began an inspection.

The Ministry of Education also held an online emergency meeting with medical school academic deans presided over by Vice Minister Oh Seok-hwan this afternoon and requested active cooperation to protect students’ right to study and ensure normal academic operation in response to group action by medical students.

The Ministry of Education requested that universities establish a response organization, such as a situation response team, to ensure close cooperation.

When students request a leave of absence, he emphasized that the requirements and processing procedures must be properly followed and academic management must be strictly managed to ensure that the leave of absence is not approved.

The Ministry of Education also asked students and parents to actively provide explanations and guidance to prevent situations where students are disadvantaged due to wrong choices.

Deans of academic affairs who participated in the meeting emphasized that they would provide support to ensure normal academic operation.

In addition, it was announced that it would take strict action to ensure that learning rights are not violated due to alliance leave of absence.

They also requested active support from the government to improve medical education conditions along with increasing the number of medical school students.
