Gyeonggi Provincial Medical Association holds representative meeting ‘opposed to increasing number of medical schools’

The Gyeonggi Provincial Medical Association held an emergency representative meeting in the conference room on the 3rd floor of the Gyeonggi Provincial Medical Association Building in Giheung-gu, Yongin-si at 4 p.m. and made this claim.

About 40 people attended the meeting, including the presidents and executives of 31 city and county medical associations in the province, and representatives of the Gyeonggi Province Medical Association Representative Council.

Participants wore bands with phrases such as ‘Withdraw the package to eliminate essential medical care’ and ‘Oppose the expansion of medical schools in ruins’, and banners with the same content were hung throughout the conference hall.

They read the resolution in the conference room and said, “The government’s unfounded populist policies are at risk of destroying the future generation’s medical field. The medical community is increasing the level of struggle against this, but the government is accepting resignation letters, collective action, and collective action.” “They are committing atrocities that would only be committed by a dictatorial government, such as banning all leave of absence,” he emphasized.

He then urged the government to completely nullify the policy to increase the number of medical schools and reconsider from the beginning.

Participants raised their voices, saying, “The government must immediately stop the unconstitutional and anti-human rights oppression and intimidation of medical staff, including medical residents and medical students, who will be responsible for the medical care of future generations,” and “The government must engage in sincere dialogue with the medical community.”

He also argued that officials from related ministries, including Minister of Health and Welfare Cho Gyu-hong, should take responsibility for the current situation and resign immediately.

At the same time, he said, “The 25,000 members of the Gyeonggi Provincial Medical Association will launch an all-out struggle if the above conditions are not accepted or if even one of the junior doctors suffers related damage,” adding, “We will launch a campaign to defeat the ruling party candidate in the April general election.” “We will continue group action, including a complete hiatus,” he said.

Participants ended the first part of the meeting by holding pickets and shouting slogans such as ‘Stop increasing the number of medical schools.’

They plan to discuss future collective action policies at the second part of the meeting, which will be held privately on this day.

Kim Young-joon, Chairman of the Gyeonggi Provincial Medical Association, said, “The Gyeonggi Provincial Medical Association has been working to stop the government by protesting for a half-day closure every Wednesday in front of the President’s Office in Yongsan since last November.” He added, “The medical community will have to work together to achieve change in the future.” He said.
