Yusuke Morii’s directorial debut… 4th place in ‘Kinema Junpo Best 10’

(Seoul = Larose.VIP) Reporter Lee Young-jae = If a salamander catches one’s eye while walking along a forest path, an adult would inadvertently look elsewhere or pass by with disgust, but a child would turn his face and observe it as if he had found a rare treasure.

The camera in the film ‘This is Amiko’ by new Japanese director Yusuke Morii (39) also does the same. The image of a salamander writhing fills the screen. The camera faithfully follows the gaze of the main character, Amiko (played by Kana Osawa).

Amiko is a 5th grade elementary school student living in Hiroshima, Japan. Even though she is a bit on the quirky side, she is an ordinary girl you see everywhere. Her family includes her father (Arata Iura), her mother (Machiko Ono), and an older brother who is several years older than her.

‘This is Amiko’ depicts what Amiko experiences at home and school.

The movie tries to capture what Amiko sees and hears from beginning to end. The audience once again realizes that what an adult sees and hears is significantly different from what a child sees and hears.

When her mother asks her why she only plays and doesn’t do her homework, Amiko doesn’t hear what she says, but instead notices a large mole on her mother’s chin. The camera shows this in close-up.

One night, when her father, who is very worried about household chores, invites Amiko to sit down and is about to talk about something deep, a large bug suddenly flies in from outside and steals the audience’s attention. At that moment, Amiko’s attention is also focused on the bug.

The film shows Amiko not only seeing and hearing, but also imagining. As Amiko tries to shake off her fear of her ghosts, the ghosts dance and sing as if they have emerged from her grave.

The audience can vaguely guess the inside story of the events that Amiko experiences, but it is difficult to grasp them accurately. She may have similar thoughts and feelings about what is happening to her as Amiko.

Rather than trying to find out the truth of the incident from an adult’s perspective, I think it would be a good way to appreciate it by going back to being a child for a moment and experiencing the world through Amiko’s eyes and ears. Then, she may suddenly feel sad that she has lost so much of her childhood world.

This is the debut film of director Morii, who entered the film industry in 2008 and worked as an assistant director. Unusually for his debut film, it ranked 4th in the ‘Kinema Junpo Best 10’ and was recognized for its artistic value, and was also invited to the 52nd Rotterdam International Film Festival and the 27th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival.

It is also the debut work of child actress Kana Osawa. Osawa was cast after an audition in which about 330 people participated.

It is based on the novel of the same name by author Natsuko Imamura. Director Morii is said to have read this novel in his 20s and decided to make it into a movie.

‘This is Amiko’, whose music was composed by Ichiko Aoba, won the Best Soundtrack Award at the 77th Mainichi Shimbun Film Awards.

Released on the 28th. 104 minutes. Full admission price.
