(Seoul = Larose.VIP) Reporter Go Mi-hye = A study has shown that companies that utilize parental leave well have higher productivity.

According to the Korea Labor Institute’s ‘Study on the Use of Parental Leave’ (Kwak Eun-hye and Kim Min-hee) on the 18th, researchers obtained these results by analyzing the impact of the child care leave system on corporate performance based on a business panel survey from 2005 to 2019.

Specifically, it was confirmed that businesses that responded that childcare leave was well utilized had sales per person, which indicates productivity, by 5.71% or 6.91%, depending on the analysis model, compared to businesses that did not.

The period of parental leave also had a positive effect on a company’s productivity, with per-capita sales increasing in businesses with a long designated period of parental leave.

In particular, the effect of parental leave on corporate performance was found to be greater in businesses with a higher-than-average proportion of female employees.

The report states, “If new personnel do not completely replace existing personnel when using parental leave, there may be a negative impact on corporate productivity, but positive effects such as securing excellent female personnel, recovering human resource investment, and securing gender diversity offset this, thereby “It seems to have led to an increase in productivity,” he explained.

However, the report said that parental leave was estimated to have no significant impact on per-capita operating profit and return on assets (ROA), which indicate profitability.

This study also confirmed that parental leave prevents women from taking a break in their careers, and that the use of leave increased when parental leave benefits were expanded.

An analysis using Korea Labor Panel data from 2009 to 2022 showed that although the probability of employment for all women decreases after the birth of their first child, women who have used childcare leave are less likely to leave the labor market than women who have not.

In addition, the rate of increase in the use of male parental leave has accelerated since 2017, when male parental leave benefits were expanded, and the number of both male and female users has increased after the male parental leave benefits were significantly expanded in 2022, the report said.

According to the National Statistical Office, as of 2022, there were 199,976 people using parental leave, of which the proportion of fathers was 27.1%, and both are steadily increasing, with the increase being noticeable in 2022.
