(Seoul = Larose.VIP) Reporter Kim Byeong-gyu = With collective action by medical residents imminent, nurses said, “The first responsibility of medical professionals is to protect the health and lives of patients,” and “they will participate in minimizing the damage (from collective action) and filling the gap in medical care.” “It is,” he said.

An official from the Nursing Association said, “We have decided to play a role in protecting the health and lives of patients if the government establishes legal protection measures.”

The Nursing Association said, “There is a growing awareness among nurses that they do not do work other than the duties assigned by law,” and added, “We demand that the government establish legal protection measures for nurses to prevent them from being harmed (by doing work outside of their duties).” He said.

The government has announced that it will consider using ‘Physician Assistant (PA) nurses’ if residents take collective action.

PA nurses, also known as operating room nurses or clinical nurses, assist in operating rooms, assist with test procedures, request specimens, and assist in emergency situations. They also take the place of some doctors on the borderline between illegality and violation of the law.

It is known that more than 10,000 people are active nationwide.

Although the government has not revealed specific plans for the use of PA nurses, hospitals are already developing response plans to utilize PA nurses as residents announced that they will leave hospitals on the 20th after mass resignation.

After the enactment of the Nursing Act was canceled in May of last year, the Nursing Association created the ‘Nurses Compliance Struggle TF’ and has been waging a ‘law compliance struggle’ to prevent PA nurses and others from engaging in actions outside the bounds of the law.

The Nursing Association decided to reorganize this task force into the ‘Medical Gap Crisis Response Nurse TF’ to monitor the medical field situation and hold daily inspection meetings to respond to the medical gap crisis.
