“Collection volume decreased due to abnormal temperatures and orders decreased sharply due to the recession.”

(Namwon = Larose.VIP) Reporter Baek Do-in = Sap collection recently began in the Baemsagol area in Namwon-si, Jeollabuk-do, the main producing area of Gorosoe sap.

However, while there are concerns that production will decrease, the number of orders has plummeted due to the economic recession, raising concerns among farmers.

Gorosoe sap, known as ‘water beneficial to bones’, contains minerals such as calcium, potassium, and magnesium, and is said to be effective in reducing bones, diuresis, and fatigue.

According to Namwon City and Baemsagol Gorosoe Farming Association on the 19th, collection of Gorosoe sap in the Baemsagol area of Jirisan Mountain began in earnest last week.

This is thanks to the weather warming up and an appropriate harvesting environment being created.

Baemsagol Gorosoe sap is produced from about 70,000 trees that live in highlands over 600m above sea level.

Kim Shin-beom, chairman of the Baemsagol Goro Beef Farming Association, said, “We have completed the work of drilling holes in trees and connecting hoses, and with the recent rise in temperature, all trees that had frozen during the winter have thawed. (The harvesting period) is similar to last year and a little later than the year before. “It’s just started,” he said.

Although the initial harvest amount is higher than usual, farmers believe that overall production may decrease.

For the sap to flow properly, the minimum temperature at night is -5 degrees Celsius and the maximum temperature during the day is around -10 degrees Celsius, but the recent daytime temperature has been too high at around 15 degrees Celsius.

Normally, sap is released until after mid-March, but if abnormally high temperatures continue, even this may be delayed.

Jang Man-ho, former chairman of the Baemsagol Goro Cow Farming Association, said, “The most important thing in determining the amount of sap collected is the temperature, but it has risen so much these days that I am a bit worried. However, the fact that the snow cover in the Baemsagol area last winter was adequate is a positive factor.”

The bigger problem is sales, which are showing signs of sharp decline.

It is said that the current orders coming into the Baemsagol Goro Soe Farming Association are at half the level of previous years.

This is because the economic recession continues for a long time and consumers are closing their wallets.

Chairman Kim said, “Sap is a fruitful crop that provides a total of more than 1 billion won in off-season income to about 100 farms in the Baemsagol area every year,” and expressed concern, “This year, both production and orders are expected to decrease, making it difficult to meet production costs.”

An official from Namwon City said, “Baemsagol Gorosoe sap has a high sugar content and a lot of inorganic components such as calcium and manganese, so it is considered the highest quality in the country.” He added, “It is collected hygienically and can be consumed with confidence, so please look for it as much as possible.”
