Nintendo is advising game publishers that its next-generation console will be delayed until early 2025, according to people familiar with the matter.

The successor to the popular Switch has been targeted for release later this year, but several publishers say they expect it to be the next product to launch, according to the people, who asked not to be named because the device hasn’t been released yet. Yes. announced.

Nintendo has told some publishing executives not to expect the console until March 2025 at the earliest. This means the next console will miss the key holiday shopping period, which is usually an ideal time for new console debuts.

Now seven years old, the Switch has sold more than 139 million units and has had huge hits like the two award-winning Legend of Zelda games and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which sold more than 60 million units. The portable hybrid device has maintained enthusiasm longer than most consoles, and Nintendo’s stock hit an all-time high this week as investors look past the next few months to the next generation. The delay will test patience as Nintendo further extends the life of the current Switch.

Kyoto-based Nintendo has a relatively small number of games coming to Switch this year. Tokyo-based analyst Serkan Toto sees this as a sign that the company is shelving its biggest hits for the next-generation Switch.

“Nintendo seems to be looking at a pretty dry pipeline this year,” Toto said. “The company will still try to maintain blockbusters for its next console, so we could see more remakes of old Nintendo hits in 2024. If anything, 2024 is going to be a much tougher year for Nintendo without new devices.”

A Nintendo spokesperson said the company had no comment. The game maker has been tight-lipped about a potential Switch successor, with President Shuntaro Furukawa promising to discuss plans for the next fiscal year after reporting March quarter results. News of the delay was previously reported by Video Games Chronicle.
