(Seoul = Larose.VIP) Reporters Jeong A-ran and Lee Dong-hwan = President Yoon Seok-yeol reportedly said on the 19th, “We will not pass by like the last administration,” in relation to the full-scale collective action in the medical community opposing the government’s policy of increasing the number of medical schools.

Multiple officials reported that President Yoon made remarks to this effect while receiving a report from his staff at the Presidential Office in Yongsan regarding group actions in the medical field, including the mass resignation of residents at large hospitals.

Unlike past governments, which eventually took a step back after confrontations with the medical community, such as withdrawing the introduction of telemedicine in 2014 and failing to increase the number of medical schools in 2020, it is interpreted that they have shown their will to somehow implement ‘medical reform’.

There is a common perception within the President’s Office that this is the last opportunity to ‘increase medical schools’, which is directly related to the reconstruction of essential and regional medical services.

President Yoon is said to have pointed out, “The medical community cannot defeat the people,” especially in response to the saying ‘the government cannot defeat doctors’ being circulated in some quarters of the medical community. He is also said to have emphasized that “medical care is a critical issue no different from national defense or public security from the perspective of people’s lives and health.”

At a later weekly meeting with Prime Minister Han Deok-soo, President Yoon asked them to “make every effort to respond to protect the lives and health of the people,” according to Presidential Office Spokesperson Kim Soo-kyung.

Regarding this, a high-ranking official from the President’s Office criticized, “Do you know how dangerous some statements like ‘the government cannot defeat doctors’ are?” and “Opinions may differ, but patients’ lives should not be put as collateral.”

The President’s Office requested restraint from the medical community to prevent the spread of collective action, but also sounded a warning.

This high-ranking official said, “We ask doctors not to leave the side of patients so that sick people do not experience difficulties. However, if there is a doctor who leaves the medical field, we have no choice but to deal with it in accordance with laws and principles.”

Meanwhile, President Yoon also instructed the Cabinet to “promptly pursue” the issues discussed in the 12 ‘People’s Livelihood Debate’.
