Strengthening biosecurity amid tension until next month when migratory birds arrive

(Uijeongbu = Larose.VIP) Reporter Woo Young-sik = Gyeonggi-do, which has suffered from livestock infectious diseases such as highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI), African swine fever (ASF), and foot-and-mouth disease every winter, is expected to spend the season without major damage this winter.

According to Gyeonggi Province on the 20th, the only livestock infectious diseases that occurred in Gyeonggi Province this winter were one ASF case that occurred in Jeokseong, Paju on the 18th of last month, and one AI case that occurred in Iljuk, Anseong, on the 8th of last month.

Accordingly, 2,375 pigs from a Paju pig farm and 257,000 chickens from an Anseong laying hen (egg-producing) farm were disposed of.

This is not a big loss compared to last winter.

Last winter, in Gyeonggi-do, 6 cases of ASF occurred in 2 cities and counties, including Pocheon and Gimpo, and 12 cases of AI occurred in 9 cities and counties, including Pyeongtaek, Anseong, and Hwaseong.

Since two cases of foot-and-mouth disease occurred in Anseong in 2019, there have been no additional outbreaks.

The fact that livestock infectious diseases did not spread in Gyeonggi-do this winter seems to have had some effect on quarantine measures.

In preparation for the outbreak of livestock infectious diseases in the winter, Gyeonggi Province has installed 36 base disinfection facilities and has been striving for quarantine measures such as controlling access to migratory bird habitats.

In the case of AI, Gyeonggi Province plans to do its best to prevent quarantine without letting go of tension as migratory birds will stay there until next month.

Choi Gyeong-mook, head of Gyeonggi Province’s Animal Quarantine and Hygiene Department, said, “It seems that the strengthening of quarantine facilities and the strengthening of quarantine by farms have had a big impact. Since winter migratory birds heading north will stay in the area until next month, we will do our best for quarantine.” said.

Meanwhile, two cases of ASF occurred nationwide this winter, one each in Gyeonggi and Gyeongbuk, but the ASF virus continues to be detected in wild boars. In Gyeonggi-do, it has not been detected to date since it was last detected in wild boars in Gapyeong in 2022.

In addition, 31 cases of AI occurred this winter in 13 cities and counties in 5 cities, including Jeonbuk, Jeonnam, Chungnam, Gyeonggi, and Gyeongbuk. There are 14 duck farms and 17 chicken farms.
