(Seoul = Larose.VIP) Reporter Kim Gil-won = Analysis shows that two out of five adults in Korea are obese, and the prevalence of ‘extreme obesity’ has nearly tripled in the past 10 years.

The Korean Society of Obesity announced on the 20th that as a result of analyzing the obesity population trend among domestic adults based on the National Health Insurance Service and the National Health and Nutrition Survey big data (2012-2021), the prevalence of obesity was calculated to be 38.4% as of 2021. .

Adult obesity is assessed by body mass index (BMI), which is weight divided by the square of height. It is usually classified into stage 1 obesity (25~29.9㎏/㎡), stage 2 obesity (30~34.9㎏/㎡), and stage 3 obesity (over 35㎏/㎡), with stages 2 and 3 being severe obesity and very severe obesity, respectively. It is called obesity.

In this study, the prevalence of obesity by stage was 32.4% in stage 1, 5.9% in stage 2, and 1.09% in stage 3, respectively.

However, looking at the increase rate over 10 years, level 3 obesity was the highest at 2.9 times, followed by level 2 (2.6 times) and level 1 (1.1 times).

By gender, the prevalence of stage 3 obesity among men was 0.35% in 2012, but increased 3.5 times to 1.21% in 2021. The number of women increased 2.3 times from 0.42% to 0.97% over the same period.

The society cited the alarming increase in the prevalence of stage 3 obesity among young people in their 20s to 40s as an area of note.

Over the past 10 years, the increase in level 3 obesity in this age group has reached 3.1 times (0.64% → 2.01%) in those in their 20s, 3.6 times (0.61% → 2.17%) in those in their 30s, and 3.4 times (0.36% → 1.23%) in those in their 40s, respectively. .

Stage 3 obesity has the highest risk of comorbidities, so it often requires dietary therapy, exercise therapy, behavioral therapy, as well as medication. In addition, depending on the progress, surgical treatment should be actively considered.

The society said, “There is a need to create social and medical conditions so that patients with stage 3 obesity can actively recognize obesity and take the path to treatment,” adding, “Above all, multifaceted movements are needed to lower the prevalence of stage 3 obesity itself.” “It is necessary,” he said.
