(Seoul = Larose.VIP) Reporter Youngjae Lee = Thanks to the success of live concert movies of famous singers such as Lim Young-woong, IU, and BTS last year, the sales and number of audiences for Korean films in special theaters such as IMAX reached an all-time high. was recorded.

According to the 2023 Korean film industry settlement report released by the Korean Film Council on the 20th, last year’s sales of special screenings of Korean films (IMAX, 4D, Screen

The number of viewers who watched Korean films in special theaters also increased by 22.3% to 1.16 million. This is the highest figure since counting began in 2018.

Youngjinwi analyzed, “This is due to the box office success of live concert movies, mainly produced by IMAX and ScreenX. Live concert movies are becoming a major genre in theaters and a box-office factor that cannot be overlooked.”

In the case of Lim Young-woong’s ‘I’m Hero the Final’, which was released in March last year when Korean films were struggling due to foreign animation, it attracted 250,000 viewers (sales of 6.1 billion won). This is a noteworthy achievement considering that the number of screens allocated was only 146.

Last year’s total sales from special screenings, including foreign films, amounted to 112.4 billion won, down 11.1% from the previous year. The number of viewers also decreased by 14.8% to 7.37 million.

Last year, total sales at movie theaters amounted to KRW 1.2614 trillion, an 8.7% increase from the previous year, and the number of audiences increased by 10.9% to 125.14 million.

The number of movie viewings per person in Korea was 2.4, a slight increase from the previous year (2.2). The Young Jinwi explained that compared to foreign data, this figure ranks 8th in the world.

In 2019, just before the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of times Koreans watched movies was the highest in the world at 4.4 times, but it fell sharply due to the pandemic and is slowly recovering.

Last year, the average price per movie viewing was 10,080 won, a 2.0% decrease from the previous year. It was analyzed that while movies with a large proportion of special theater sales, such as ‘Avatar: Waterways’ and ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, were successful in 2022, the success of animations last year was mainly responsible for the success.

Last year, TV VOD market sales amounted to 127 billion won, down 21.1% from the previous year. The number of TV VOD uses also decreased by 24.3% from the previous year to 20.38 million, the lowest since counting began in 2012.

The filmmaking committee explains that this is an aftereffect of the lack of popularity of Korean movies released during the peak season and the growth of online video services (OTT).

In its latest Korean film industry settlement report, the Korean Film Industry Commission also included the basic status of OTT Korean original movies and series for the first time. The scope of the investigation was expanded to reflect the trend of blurring the boundaries of video content due to the growth of OTT.

Last year, the number of original Korean movies and series on OTT totaled 59 (9 movies, 50 series), a decrease of 6 from the previous year (9 movies, 56 series).

From 2019 to last year, there were 34 OTT original Korean movies and 156 series. By OTT, Netflix had the most with 65 films (20 movies, 45 series), followed by TVING (5 movies, 32 series).
