Chinese home appliance brand Meizu officially announced that it will withdraw from the Android smartphone business. The company launched the Meizu 21 in China in November 2023, and it may now be the last existing phone to hit the market. The brand also said it will now develop both software and hardware solutions around emerging technologies, with a strong focus on artificial intelligence (AI). Notably, this is the second time Meizu is exiting an existing business, the first being in 2007 when it exited manufacturing MP3 devices.

The information first came from a Weibo post by Meiju’s former marketing director Li Nan, and was later confirmed by the company through a video on Meiju’s website. In the announcement, company CEO Ziyu Shen said changes in the smartphone market were the main reason for the switch. He noted that it now takes users an average of 51 months, or just over four years, to upgrade their smartphones.

He also highlighted that competitors also offer similar performance in terms of smoothness, photography and software experience, which has contributed to the added competition. He added that Chinese brands now want to go “all in.” [on] “All inclusive”. We will now focus on terminal AI devices and provide solutions from both hardware and software aspects.

In the future, Meizu plans to modify Flyme OS for smartphones into an operating system for AI devices. We also plan to develop a new mobile OS focusing on AI functions and integrate AI into smartphones. Shen also hinted that they might try different form factors, mentioning devices like Humane’s AI Pin and Rabbit R1. The announcement also revealed that the Chinese consumer tech brand may unveil its first AI hardware later this year. Details about what it is have not been shared.

Meizu also stated that existing smartphones in China will continue to be supported and offline retailers will not be affected. It is unclear whether smartphones from overseas markets will also be supported. This makes Meizu 21 the company’s last smartphone. Because it is unknown whether it will work again on the speculated Meizu 21 Pro or Meizu 22 series.
