According to a report, Apple is expected to launch the 4th generation AirPods and the new AirPods Max later this year, despite no new information leaks. The tech giant is going through some tough times, with reports emerging that Apple Vision Pro buyers are returning headsets at unusually high rates. However, this hasn’t damaged its long-term plans and the company is reportedly planning to unveil two variants of the new AirPods.

Apple is expected to bring two new AirPods and a new AirPods Max to market in late 2024, Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman recently revealed in his weekly Power On newsletter. This information provides a much-needed update to his previous report. Development first mentioned in October 2023. At the time, Gurman said two variants of the true wireless stereo (TWS) earphones would replace the second- and third-generation AirPods.

The report suggested that the earphones could be completely redesigned from top to bottom. It is said to boast a shorter stem, new earbud design, and new charging case design. Audio quality is also expected to be upgraded. Between the two variants, the base model gets the new earbuds and charging case design but misses out on Active Noise Cancellation (ANC).

Meanwhile, the more expensive model is said to be equipped with a charging case speaker that can play sounds through ANC and the location tracking feature of the Find My app. That’s not all, as the report also states that new AirPods Pro could be unveiled by Apple in 2025 with an updated chip, which could be Apple’s H3 chipset.

Along with this, Apple is also expected to introduce the new high-end AirPods Max. Unlike earphones, headphones aren’t likely to get a major overhaul. According to Gurman, the new model could ditch the Lightning port in favor of a USB Type-C port and gain wired audio playback capabilities. It may also be launched in newer color options. The current generation AirPods Max are available in green, pink, silver, sky blue, and space gray.
