Residents will stop working from today… Medical gap becomes a reality

(Seoul = Larose.VIP) Reporter Seo Hye-rim = A group of medical students who protested against the government’s policy to increase the number of medical school students compared the government’s response to this situation to a military regime and announced that they would take collective action, such as submitting a collective leave of absence report.

Representatives of 40 medical schools and graduate schools across the country, including Kim Min-ho, student council president of Seoul National University College of Medicine, issued a joint statement on the 20th, saying, “The health of future generations and patients who will suffer from doctors trained indiscriminately, and the health of patients, will not be properly educated due to the increase in the number of doctors.” “In order to protect our juniors, we will begin submitting alliance leave of absence reports from today,” he said.

They said, “Why can’t the Ministry of Health and Welfare, which is responsible for the health and well-being of future generations, anticipate the confusion and damage to the public that will occur when incompetent doctors are produced?” They said, “Why can’t the government’s policy meet the quality of medical care expected by future generations?” “It’s moving in that direction,” he criticized.

Student representatives also pointed out that the government is not properly communicating with the field regarding the expansion of medical schools.

They said, “The Ministry of Education has not once communicated with students, telling them to just keep quiet and study. At the same time, the government is sending in the police to demand the phone numbers of student representatives from the school and creating anxiety.”

In particular, he pointed out, “The government’s undemocratic measures and coercive orders reminiscent of the era of military dictatorship are taking place in real time today in 2024,” and “It is questionable whether 2024 is right now.”

They demanded that the government withdraw its policy to increase the number of medical school students and establish a channel for communication with Korean medical schools, the Association of Medical Graduate Schools (KMA), and medical students.

Kim Min-ho, the student council president of Seoul National University College of Medicine, who was named in the statement, also announced that he had submitted an application for leave of absence to the school for personal reasons.

He also requested, “The government should stop interrogating student representatives, such as requesting the personal information and contact information of each school’s student council president.”

According to the Ministry of Education, as of 6 p.m. on the 19th, the number of medical students who had applied for leave of absence for group action in protest against the government’s policy to increase the number of medical school students was estimated to be up to 1,129. As the Medical University Association has decided to take collective action starting on the 20th, the number of submissions for leave of absence is expected to increase further.
