Syngman Rhee’s documentary ‘The Founding War’ is an unusual success… Surpassed 180,000 in 10 days

(Seoul = Larose.VIP) Reporter Youngjae Lee = The documentary film ‘National Foundation War’, which sheds light on the life and politics of former President Syngman Rhee, surpassed 800,000 cumulative viewers on the 21st.

According to the distributor Document Story, the cumulative number of viewers for ‘The Founding War’ exceeded 800,000 this morning.

‘Foundation of the Nation’, which started at 5th place in the box office when it was released on the 1st, started to gain full-scale box office popularity during the Lunar New Year holiday (9th to 12th), and has been in 2nd place since the 15th.

As the attendance of key figures from the ruling party fuels the box office success, audiences appear to be rallying around the conservative camp.

As the number of screens allocated to ‘Founding War’ rapidly increased from 167 to 843 (as of the 20th), the seat sales rate (the ratio of the number of audiences to the number of seats allocated to the film) fell to 9.3%, but it ranks first among released films.

There are predictions that if this trend continues, it will be possible to exceed 1 million people. This is an unusual success for a documentary that rarely receives attention in theaters.

Among political documentaries of all time, the most successful film is director Lee Chang-jae’s ‘Roh Moo-hyun’ (2017), with a cumulative audience of 1.85 million.

‘You are the Fatherland’ (2022, 330,000 people) and ‘Moon Jae-in’ (2023, 110,000 people) were also successful, but they fell far short of ‘National Foundation War’. The cumulative number of viewers for ‘Kim Dae-jung on the Road’, which was released on the 10th of last month, was about 124,000.

‘The War for the Founding of a Nation’ is well-received for reexamining the achievements of former President Syngman Rhee, who was widely viewed negatively as a dictator, but it is also heavily criticized for being a one-sided political propaganda piece.

Jin Joong-kwon, a special professor at Kwangwoon University, criticized the ‘nation founding war’ as being against the spirit of the Constitution, which inherits the April 19 democratic ideology. A controversy broke out when Director Kim refuted this.

Director Kim also announced plans to release a sequel to ‘The Founding War’. A press conference that also serves as a production presentation will be held on the 29th to reveal specific details.

Director Kim explains that while ‘Founding War’ focused on highlighting the former president’s political achievements, the sequel is a work that shows his human side.

He said, “In ‘Founding War 2,’ we will capture Syngman Rhee’s human dignity and indomitable will to overcome suffering, adversity, and frustration on the screen.”

‘Founding War’ was released at CGV in the United States thanks to the momentum of its domestic box office success.

On the 20th of next month, a preview of the film will be held at the U.S. Congress in Washington, D.C., hosted by the Korean-American Association, an American community group. It is said that the preview was held in response to the proposal of the Korea-U.S. Association by Congresswoman Michelle Park Steele, who is of Korean descent.
