According to the report, Hanooman, a set of language models focused on Indian demographics, was released on Wednesday, February 21. The artificial intelligence (AI) model was reportedly created by the BharatGPT group, which is backed by Reliance Industries. The group is led by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay and seven other IITs. The AI model was reportedly showcased at a technology event held in Mumbai recently. This comes just a month after Reliance Jio announced Jio Brain, an AI and machine learning (ML) platform for enterprises.

According to a report by Bloomberg, the consortium plans to release the AI model next month. According to reports, the Hanooman series AI models support 11 Indian regional languages and will work in healthcare, governance, financial services, and education. This may mean that the language model was trained on data relevant to that domain, and as a result, AI tools built using that model will also be proficient in that domain.

Although language accessibility is a big focus, Hanooman is also said to offer multimodal capabilities, including text, voice, and video. Ganesh Ramakrishnan, chair of the computer science department at IIT Bombay, told Bloomberg that it will also offer voice-to-text capabilities. The goal is to reach people who cannot read or write. The event also reportedly showcased VizzhyGPT, a customized version of the AI model that operates in the healthcare field and learned relevant data.

The media said that during the event, a demo video was released showing a mechanic asking a question to a chatbot created in Tamil using Hanuman, a bank employee speaking in Hindi, and a developer using it to write code.

A separate report by the Times of India touts it as open source. It was emphasized that the first four language models of the Hanooman series, containing 1.5 billion, 7 billion, 13 billion, and 40 billion parameters respectively, will be made available to developers and researchers. It is likely that it will become available for building specific AI tools, such as chatbot summarization. Since Reliance Jio is known to be building certain AI tools based on language models, it is unlikely that commercial rights for those models will be granted.
