Alphabet unit Google has told its suppliers to start producing Pixel smartphones in India as early as next quarter as part of plans to ship more than 10 million Pixel phones this year, the Nikkei newspaper reported Thursday.

Google said in October that it would start manufacturing smartphones in India and that its flagship Pixel 8 would be launched in 2024 with a greater focus on key growth markets.

The move will help Google diversify its supply chain away from China, the Nikkei report said, citing a person with direct knowledge of the matter.

Citing multiple sources, the tech giant added that it will prepare the production line for its high-end Pixel 8 Pro smartphone in the coming weeks and begin production of the phone in the April-June quarter.

The report did not say how many phones Google plans to manufacture in India or whether the phones will be sold domestically or used for export.

Google did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.
