Palworld, an action-adventure survival title that broke player count records on Steam at launch, has sold 15 million copies on Valve’s platform. Developer Pocketpair announced Thursday that the game’s total player count has surpassed 25 million, including 15 million on Steam and 10 million on Xbox. Since its release last month, Palworld has become a phenomenon, becoming one of the most played games in Steam history. Although it has been accused of plagiarism for the Pokémon-style creatures in the game that players can capture, train, and utilize in battle.

Japanese studio Pocketpair, the creators of Palworld, confirmed in a post on Thursday that the game has surpassed 25 million players overall and sold 15 million units on Steam. The survival title has 10 million players on Xbox, but it’s likely that some of that number will be players accessing the game through Xbox Game Pass.

Last month, Microsoft confirmed that Palworld was the largest third-party Game Pass launch ever and the most played game on the platform. Pocketpair CEO Takuro Mizobe said at the time that player response was “tremendous.” “This is just the beginning for us and Palworld, and the feedback we gather in the Game Preview will allow us to continue to improve the Pal Tamers experience across all platforms,” he added.

Currently, Palworld is the 5th most played game on Steam, with 206,401 concurrent players at the time of this writing, according to SteamDB charts. It has the highest player count of all time on the platform, behind PUBG: Battlegrounds.

While Palworld’s player numbers skyrocketed, the game became the subject of controversy over the design of the in-game creatures called Pals. Several players, developers, and commentators have accused the game of plagiarizing Pokémon’s creature designs.

The Pokémon Company issued a statement last month addressing the plagiarism allegations and saying it would investigate allegations of copyright infringement. “We have received many inquiries about third-party games released in January 2024,” the company said in a statement. “We have never authorized the use of Pokémon intellectual property or its game assets.”

Palworld launched in early access on January 19th and is available for PC (via Steam), Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X, and is also included in Xbox Game Pass. The game includes Pokémon-style animals (Pals) that can be captured and tamed for battle, movement, and base building in the game’s open world.
