(Gwangju = Larose.VIP) Reporter Jeong Hoe-seong = At the medical school graduation ceremony held amidst the ‘hospital desertion’ incident of residents that continued for four days, senior doctors continued to express their apologies to juniors who will go on to the medical field.

At the graduation ceremony held on the 23rd at the Chonnam National University College of Medicine Myeonghoe Hall, Dean Jeong Young-do of the College of Medicine began his congratulatory speech by saying, “I would like to express my deepest apologies to the graduates and parents here.”

Dean Jeong said, “If our senior doctors had proactively responded to essential medical care, local medical care, and the number of doctors, our graduates would not have started their careers as doctors with such a heavy heart.”

He added, “We failed to gain the public’s trust. These are our faults, so we apologize and apologize.”

Not only the dean, who was sending off the students, but also the hospital director, who was welcoming the new doctors, gave congratulatory speeches at the graduation ceremony that day with a heavy heart.

Jeong Shin, director of Chonnam National University Hospital, said, “As the dean also mentioned, it is regrettable that the medical community should have quickly proactively presented reasonable analysis and solutions when discussions about the shortage of essential medical care began several years ago.”

On this day, Chonnam National University College of Medicine produced 122 graduates.

At the graduation ceremony, which was held in a solemn atmosphere unlike any other year, graduates hung their graduation medals around their necks and continued to take the Hippocratic Oath.

Most of the graduates were scheduled to join Chonnam National University Hospital as interns starting next month, but it is reported that many of them submitted a resignation letter in line with the mass resignation of residents.

As the group departure from the hospital entered its fourth day, Chonnam National University Hospital was in disarray with remaining medical staff trying to fill the vacant positions of their colleagues and patients waiting for their turn in treatment with anxiety.

Ambulances waiting to transport patients to secondary hospitals or nursing hospitals were also lined up at the entrance to the main building.

One patient who visited the hospital said, “I am not feeling any major inconvenience yet, but I am worried that if this situation continues, concerns about a medical gap will become real. I hope the government and the medical community will find a solution together as soon as possible.”

At Chonnam National University Hospital, 278 out of 319 residents at the main hospital and branch hospitals have submitted letters of resignation, and 114 have not yet returned, leading to a decrease in the number of surgeries and the occupancy rate of hospitalization rooms.

At Chosun University Hospital, 113 out of 142 residents continue to leave work.

The Gwangju City Medical Association plans to participate in large numbers in the rally held in Seoul on the 25th and 3rd of next month.
