(Seoul = Larose.VIP) Reporter Oh Bo-ram = Director Kim Da-min (31) is one of the new faces that has recently attracted attention in the content industry.

The Netflix series ‘Murderer’, which he wrote, ranked first in viewing time in the non-English TV series category, and his first directorial work, ‘Makgeolli Will Tell You’, won the Aurora Media Award at the 28th Busan International Film Festival.

What is surprising is that he worked on two works at the same time. He is busy working on a movie and then writes a series of scripts when he goes home.

Director Kim, who met at the Pan Cinema building in Jongno-gu, Seoul on the 23rd, said, “‘Murderer’s Conundrum’ and ‘Makgeolli Will Tell You’ were works in completely different directions. There are points where they complement each other, so if I get tired while working on this work, I will work on that work. “I used to run away,” he said, laughing.

‘Makgeolli Will Tell You’, which director Kim wrote the screenplay himself, is a black comedy armed with wit, unlike the thriller ‘Murderer’. It depicts the story of Dong-chun (Park Na-eun), an elementary school student suffering from private education, who one day meets Makgeolli, who speaks to her.

This movie is full of fantasy elements. For example, Makgeolli converts Persian into Morse code to send a signal to Dong-chun, and Dong-chun, who has been trained through private education, recognizes this right away. The secret of her private education that Dong-chun discovers is also satirical.

Director Kim explained, “Isn’t it even more absurd that we teach so many things to children (through private education) as if we were training astronauts? That’s why I intentionally included a lot of ‘nonsense elements’ in the movie.”

However, the movie does not portray Dong-chun as only unhappy. It also shows Dong-chun, who used to obey her parents, carving her own path and overcoming her trauma.

Director Kim said, “This movie is the story of Dong-chun finding answers to the questions she had about life,” and added, “Once Dong-chun finds out how he wants to live, he will be happy in the future.”

The reason he came to write the scenario for ‘Makgeolli Will Tell You’ was while taking a traditional liquor making class at the district office. It is said that the makgeolli that pops bubbles is so fascinating that it made him want to make a movie about makgeolli.

Then one day, I saw children lined up in an academy vehicle lined up in front of an elementary school. Director Kim, who said, “The scenery was so strange,” suddenly thought about what it would be like to write a work that features makgeolli and children together.

He completed the first draft in a week and won the grand prize for his work in the Gyeonggi Scenario Contest. He searched for production companies to turn this scenario into a movie, but few were willing to do so. Meanwhile, the work that director Kim was offered to write a screenplay for was ‘Murderer: A Puzzle.’

Director Kim said, “It was a webtoon I enjoyed very much when I was in high school, but I wondered why it hadn’t been made into a video yet.” He added, “I feel that it means a lot to have it finally come out to the world (as a series).”

He is said to have been a ‘comics fanatic’ ever since. When he was in middle school, watching cartoons or movies or reading scenarios was his daily routine. Afterwards, he entered the video directing department at Korea Animation High School and got one step closer to his dream of becoming a film director.

But I didn’t study film or video in college. She laid the foundation for writing good works while majoring in psychology and cultural anthropology at Yonsei University. By the time I graduated, I had gained field experience by working as a director for works such as ‘The Villain’ and ‘Park Hwa-young’.

Director Kim, who said, “I want to become a filmmaker,” emphasized, “It’s more fun to create (direct) the story I really want to tell,” rather than just writing a scenario.

“Although it is difficult, I want to expand the scope of my responsibility little by little. Next time, I will try to show (my colors) more. Even if it is not a work that fits the commercial formula, I think the public always wants to see something new. “I think it was because of these times that I was able to film works like ‘Makgeolli Will Tell You.’”
