Fourth day of collective action by majors… Patients flocking to secondary hospitals

(Changwon = Larose.VIP) Reporter Jeong Jong-ho = “It seems like the hospital has been rapidly crowded with patients since the 20th. It seems like there are more than twice as many people than usual.”

On the afternoon of the 23rd, the fourth day of the resident’s mass resignation, Kim Si-hyeon (40), an inpatient at Changwon Hanmaeum Hospital in Uichang-gu, Changwon-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, a secondary medical institution, said this.

At Changwon Hanmaeum Hospital, where about 100 doctors, including specialists and full-time doctors, work, a total of four residents recently resigned.

This hospital, which originally has a small number of residents due to its low dependence on training, was not hit hard by this incident, but the number of patients visiting the hospital appears to be increasing as treatment disruptions continue at other high-level general hospitals in the province.

Even though it was afternoon, when the number of patients visiting the hospital is usually reduced, there was a steady stream of patients coming for treatment in the hospital lobby that day.

Mr. Kim said, “A patient I met at the hospital recently came to this hospital after being refused treatment at a nearby general hospital. Perhaps because of the many cases like this, the number of patients is noticeably more crowded than a week ago.”

Mr. Kim, a patient in his 30s whom I met in front of the hospital’s unmanned complaint counter, also explained, “This is the first time I’ve seen so many people in the hospital,” and added, “I think patients are flocking here due to the resident’s resignation.”

In fact, there are two cases of delayed emergency transport officially confirmed by the Changwon Fire Department.

In this case, both patients were refused treatment at a tertiary general hospital and were transferred to Changwon Hanmaeum Hospital.

In addition to refusal of treatment, waiting times seem to be getting longer as the number of patients increases.

Mr. Jim, in his 30s, who visited the pediatric department of this hospital with his child’s cold symptoms, said, “I made an appointment for 3:30 this afternoon, but now the time is up, and there are still about 10 people waiting in front of me.”

Mr. Ji added, “I don’t know if it’s more because today is Friday, but it seems like people are flocking here due to the mass resignation of majors.”

As he said, the patient waiting area at Changwon Hanmaeum Hospital on this day was full of children and their guardians wishing to receive treatment.

An official at Changwon Hanmaum Hospital said, “I know that there are quite a few cases of patients coming to our hospital because they did not receive sufficient treatment at higher-level medical institutions following the mass resignation of residents. We are trying to accommodate patients who come to the hospital as much as possible.”
