(Seoul = Larose.VIP) Reporter Hwang Jae-ha = ‘Please include information about a group strike over cancer patients’, ‘Will residents here also submit their collective resignations soon?’, ‘Cancel the production of dramas that glorify doctors.’

Doctors protesting against the government’s policy of increasing the number of medical schools are taking collective action, and patients are turning cold to the resulting medical vacuum. As a result, tvN’s drama ‘Someday Wise Resident Life’ (hereinafter referred to as ‘Resident Life’) is about to be aired. Sparks are flying.

According to the broadcast content industry on the 25th, tvN posted a short 15-second video previewing the broadcast of ‘Life as a Resident’, a drama based on the hospital life of medical residents, on the drama promotion YouTube channel ‘tvN Drama’ on the 8th of this month.

The 30 comments posted on this video in the week after it was uploaded were mostly opinions about the drama or actors, but most of the 50 comments posted since mid-month were criticizing doctors who took collective action against the increase in medical schools. .

Some comments expressed strong antipathy, referencing media reports that messages exchanged between doctors within the hospital contained disparaging content toward patients and nurses. Some responded sympathetically, saying, ‘The timing (of airing the drama) is so bad.’

‘Life as a Doctor’, scheduled to be broadcast in the first half of the year, is a spin-off of the ‘Wise Doctor Life’ series, whose seasons 1 and 2 were broadcast in 2020 and 2021, respectively. It is a work that shares the same worldview but features different characters as the main characters.

In the previous ‘Wise Doctor’s Life’ series, actors such as Jo Jung-seok, Jung Kyung-ho, and Yoo Yeon-seok played specialists at Yulje Hospital, while ‘Resident Life’ is a work depicting hospital life centered around a first-year resident at Jongno Yulje Obstetrics and Gynecology, played by Go Yoon-jung.

The previous works gained great popularity, recording high viewership ratings of 16% and 14%, respectively, and the production of a spin-off was decided, but it seems to be hindered by social controversies outside of the work ahead of the broadcast.

Some of the comments criticizing ‘Life as a Medical Resident’ point out that it is uncomfortable for the drama to glorify doctors. The idea is that it is wrong for a drama to glorify doctors at a time when doctors’ collective actions are a problem.

The released 15-second video only showed the actors and the content was not revealed, but like previous works, it is expected to be mainly about the viewers’ sympathy for them, as it is based on the difficult hospital life of doctors. .

JTBC’s drama ‘Doctor Slump’ starring Park Shin-hye and Park Hyeong-sik is also set to have two main characters as doctors, but no particular controversy arose. This is because this drama is mainly about the love story of the two main characters who are disappointed for their own reasons rather than their professional lives.

If the conflict between the government and doctors surrounding the expansion of medical schools and the medical gap are not resolved in the short term before ‘Life as a Resident’ is broadcast, negative views toward the drama are likely to continue.

Considering this, tvN has decided to wait and see how the medical vacuum situation progresses rather than immediately promoting ‘Life as a Medical Resident’ and has not yet confirmed the broadcast date. The drama is only scheduled for the first half of this year, but there is a possibility that it may be delayed depending on the situation.

Gong Hee-jeong, a drama critic, pointed out, “The timing of the programming coincided with a social phenomenon, but it is difficult to say that the producer put social intentions into the drama,” and added, “The drama should only be viewed as a drama.”

Critic Gong, however, said, “Because the current issue is hot, it is quite possible to link it to the drama,” and added, “I think we will come to terms with it over time. Putting this kind of reaction at the center of the debate is actually inflaming the controversy.” I was wary of interpretation.
