(Seoul = Larose.VIP) Reporter Kwon Ji-hyeon = Representatives of medical groups opposing the government’s expansion of medical schools and promotion of essential medical policies held an emergency meeting and said, “If the government unilaterally enforces the policy, the entire medical community will mobilize all legitimate means and methods to resist until the end.” “I will do it,” he said.

On the afternoon of the 25th, the Emergency Response Committee of the Korean Medical Association (KMA) held an expanded representative meeting with the participation of heads of city and provincial medical associations across the country at the Medical Association Hall in Yongsan-gu, Seoul and announced this resolution.

They called for an immediate halt to the 2,000-student increase in medical schools across the country, arguing that such a policy would not only lead to poor medical education, but could also cause medical costs to skyrocket and pass the burden on to future generations.

It was also argued that the ‘essential medical policy package’ promoted by the government along with the increase in personnel would infringe on the people’s free medical choice and restrict doctors’ right to medical treatment.

In his opening speech, Emergency Committee Chairman Kim Taek-woo said, “The current situation is an emergency that is comparable to the division of medicine in 2000,” and emphasized, “It is time for the entire medical community to come together to prevent this.”

At this meeting, the Emergency Committee plans to ask whether the start and end of future collective action in the medical community will be decided by a vote of all members. Previously, at the emergency committee level, a policy was established that ‘the beginning and end of collective action in the medical field will be decided by a vote of all members.’

Accordingly, there is speculation within and outside of the Korean Medical Association that they are trying to reorganize the battle line through this vote.

A representative who attended the meeting said, “Residents and full-time doctors are taking action like this, so can senior practitioners in private practice remain silent? I think there will be discussions about how to respond in the future, whether it is collective action or a struggle to comply with the law.”

An emergency committee official said, “The situation is urgent, so we are planning to discuss various issues in preparation for any incident that may occur next week.”

After the meeting ended that day, the emergency committee and national doctor representatives decided to march on the streets to the Yongsan Presidential Office, demanding the cancellation of the increase in medical schools.
