Sancheong County Mayor Lee Seung-hwa “Supports expansion of medical school quota”

Sancheong County Mayor Lee Seung-hwa “Supports expansion of medical school quota”

(Sancheong = Larose.VIP) Reporter Park Jeong-heon = Amid the medical crisis that has become a reality as residents leave hospitals in droves in opposition to the expansion of medical schools, Lee Seung-hwa, the governor of Sancheong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, is attracting attention by revealing that he strongly supports the government’s policy of expanding the number of medical school students.

According to Sancheong County on the 25th, County Governor Lee issued a statement on the 23rd saying, “The expansion of medical personnel must be done to solve local medical problems that are in crisis,” and “I strongly support the government’s medical reform policy.”

He said, “Currently, Sancheong-gun has long since entered a super-aging society with the elderly population accounting for more than 40%. However, the County Health Medical Center is the only medical institution in the region, so it is completely dependent on public health doctors.”

He added, “The production of public health doctors is decreasing every year, and we have put out several job advertisements to recruit doctors. However, doctors do not prefer rural areas, so the local medical environment is beyond the crisis stage and is at the level of destruction.”

In Sancheong, 25 public health doctors were deployed to provide treatment in 2021, but the number of public health doctors is decreasing every year, with 24 being deployed in 2022 and 21 last year.

County Governor Lee emphasized, “Increasing the number of doctors in essential medical fields in medically vulnerable areas such as Sancheong is an essential policy,” and added, “We welcome and support the government’s medical reform.”

He added, “We long for our residents to be able to receive better health care services,” and added, “For the lives and safety of the people, doctors must return to work as soon as possible and perform their duties.”
