(Geneva = Larose.VIP) Correspondent Ahn Hee = A UN agency has diagnosed that around the world, one patient dies from cervical cancer every two minutes, and low access to vaccines in low- and middle-income countries is limiting their ability to overcome the disease.

“Cervical cancer is one of the few cancers that can be prevented by a vaccine, but somewhere in the world, it is one of the few cancers that can be prevented,” said Ervi Verhussel, head of communications at the United Nations International Organization for the Purchasing of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UNITAD), in a briefing at the UN Geneva office on the 13th (local time). “Every minute, one woman dies from this disease,” he said.

It is pointed out that more than 720 deaths from cervical cancer occur every day worldwide.

Bearhussel pointed out that the reason for the difficulty in responding to the disease is that the vaccination rate for the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, which prevents cervical cancer, shows a large gap depending on the income of each country.

He said, “HPV testing, treatment, and vaccination are ways to prevent cervical cancer, but due to limitations in vaccine accessibility in each country and exhaustion of medical capacity in response to COVID-19, only 1 in 5 girls and adolescents around the world are vaccinated.” “It has been received,” he explained.

Dr. Prevo Varango, director of non-communicable diseases at the World Health Organization (WHO), who was present at the briefing, also said, “Access to treatment in low- and middle-income countries is an important task in overcoming cervical cancer.”

He said, “If more children and adolescents are vaccinated and access to screening and treatment services improves, we will be on the path to eradicating cervical cancer by 2030.”
