Gwangju English Broadcasting

Gwangju English Broadcasting

(Gwangju = Larose.VIP) Reporter Son Sang-won = Gwangju City, which has begun reviewing the existence of Gwangju English Broadcasting (GFN), decided to decide whether to abolish it after exploring ways to utilize the frequencies it has already secured.

According to Gwangju City on the 13th, Gwangju English Broadcasting broadcasts foreign language broadcasts in English, Chinese, and Vietnamese 24 hours a day to most areas of Gwangju and Jeollanam-do, including Gwangju (FM 98.7 MHz) and Yeosu (FM 93.7 MHz).

Gwangju City reported that if English broadcasting is abolished and the frequency is returned, a huge budget may be required to allocate a new frequency.

Gwangju City Council member Lim Mi-ran recently argued in a 5-minute speech at the extraordinary plenary session, “We must first look for ways to revitalize Gwangju English Broadcasting before taking the step of abolishing it.”

In particular, Rep. Lim emphasized, “The two terrestrial frequencies owned by Gwangju English Broadcasting are valuable public assets that enhance the quality of Gwangju City.”

Gwangju City is exploring whether there is a way to utilize the frequency for public purposes.

Gwangju Mayor Kang Ki-jeong said, “We are at a point where we are worried about whether we can utilize the frequency in a meaningful way. The concerns about English broadcasting are concerns about the frequency, and once those concerns are resolved, a conclusion will be reached quickly.”

Mayor Kang said, “We need to comprehensively look at not only the budget, but also what meaning English broadcasting is reaching foreigners in Gwangju,” and added, “We are discussing it in various directions, including the National Assembly.”
