(Seoul = Larose.VIP) Reporter Youngjae Lee = Director Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’, a biopic of Robert Oppenheimer, the genius scientist who led the United States’ development of nuclear weapons, swept major awards at this year’s Academy Awards (Oscars).

Unfortunately, Korean director Celine Song’s ‘Fast Lives’ did not receive any awards.

At the 96th Academy Awards held at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, USA on the 10th (local time), ‘Oppenheimer’ won seven categories, including the highest award, Best Picture, becoming the most awarded film at this year’s awards ceremony.

In addition to Best Picture, the Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, and Best Music Awards went to ‘Oppenheimer.’

‘Oppenheimer’ is a biographical film depicting the life of Oppenheimer, who led the Manhattan Project to develop U.S. nuclear weapons during World War II. It was predicted early on that it would sweep this year’s Academy Awards thanks to its worldwide box office performance and favorable reviews from critics. The number of categories for which there were candidates was also the largest, with 13.

Director Nolan also received the Academy Award for Best Director for the first time in his life. He starred in ‘Dunkirk’ (2017), ‘Interstellar’ (2014), ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ (2012), ‘Inception’ (2010), ‘The Dark Knight’ (2008), and ‘Batman Begins’ (2005). Despite his splendid filmography, he had nothing to do with the Academy Award for Best Director.

The Best Actor award also went to Cillian Murphy for ‘Oppenheimer.’ He was evaluated for vividly depicting Oppenheimer’s genius and human suffering.

The Best Actress award, where the competition was so fierce that it was difficult to predict the winner, was won by Emma Stone, who gave her all-out performance as the female Frankenstein in director Yorgos Lanthimos’s ‘Poor Things’.

This is Stone’s second Academy Award for Best Actress. He also won the Best Actress Award at the 89th Academy Awards for ‘La La Land’ (2016).

The Best Supporting Actor award went to DeVine Joy Randolph, who played the chef of a prestigious American high school in ‘Barton Academy’, and the Best Supporting Actor award went to Robert Downey Jr., who played Oppenheimer’s nemesis Strauss in ‘Oppenheimer’.

The American film ‘Fast Lives’, which attracted attention as a work by a Korean director, was nominated for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay, but did not win the award. The Best Screenplay Award went to ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ directed by Justin Trier.

The Best Animated Feature Award went to director Hayao Miyazaki’s ‘How Will You Live?’ This is director Miyazaki’s second win for Best Animated Feature, following ‘Spirited Away’ (2002).

The Best Documentary Feature Award went to “20 Days in Mariupol,” directed by Mstislav Chernov, which depicts the horrors of the war in Ukraine.

This follows ‘Nabalny’, which deals with the attempted poisoning of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s political rival Alexei Navalny, winning the feature-length documentary award at last year’s awards ceremony, and is interpreted as reflecting critical sentiment toward Russia.

The International Feature Film Award, which targets works from countries other than the United States, went to ‘The Zone of Interest.’ ‘Poor Things’, with its outstanding visual beauty, attracted attention by sweeping all related categories including Best Costume, Makeup, and Art.

No Korean films were nominated for this awards ceremony.

Korean films received attention when director Bong Joon-ho’s ‘Parasite’ won four awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best International Film at the 92nd Academy Awards in 2020. At the awards ceremony the following year, actress Yoon Yeo-jeong won the Best Supporting Actress award for ‘Minari’, directed by Korean-American director Lee Isaac Chung.
