Ahn Cheol-soo, chairman of the National Power Joint Election Committee, reveals his position on increasing the number of medical schools

(Seongnam = Larose.VIP) Reporter Lee Woo-seong = On the 26th, People Power Party Joint Election Committee Chairman Ahn Cheol-soo proposed to the government to reexamine the government’s plan to increase the number of medical schools by 2,000 students and calculate it through scientific evidence and data in relation to the legislative conflict surrounding the issue of increasing the number of medical schools. did.

Chairman Ahn, who used to be a doctor, held a private meeting with Bang Jae-seung, chairman of the emergency response committee of Seoul National University College of Medicine and Seoul National University Hospital, delegations, and residents at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital this morning, and then held an emergency press conference at the Seongnam City Council to announce his position regarding the expansion of medical schools and made this announcement.

He proposed three mediation plans to the government that were discussed as solutions to the legislative conflict during a meeting with the medical community that day.

Chairman Ahn said, “Where did the 2,000 people come from? Anyone who looks at it can’t help but wonder whether this is an artificially created number. We need to verify it through scientific evidence and data and accurately calculate the number of medical school seats needed to expand.”

He continued, “Increasing the number of medical school students needs to be applied later after reaching agreement through scientific estimation (expected to take about 3 to 6 months).”

He said, “It takes about 10 years to create medical school professors who can properly train doctors, but if we suddenly increase the number of medical school students by 2,000 and the number of medical school professors by 1,000, it will lead to poor education, and our country’s medical standard will decline and a catastrophe will occur.” He said, “I am in favor of increasing the number of doctors.” However, he insisted, “There needs to be a ‘gradual increase in troops.’”

Chairman Ahn said, “If the medical strike (conflict over resolution) continues for more than a month as is, there is concern about an irreparable collapse of the medical system.” He added, “The government will meet directly with residents and students and withdraw the order to start work and cancellation of license suspension.” “Rather than insisting on a plan to increase the number of personnel by 2,000 people and resolve judicial risks, we should leave it to an objective organization and propose to come up with a verified plan first,” he said.

To this end, he proposed, “Let’s form a society-wide medical reform consensus body that includes credible domestic organizations and civic groups that can be accepted by both the government and medical groups, rather than a legislative consensus body, and come up with a compromise.”

Chairman Ahn also reported the results of his meeting with the medical community, saying that they also discussed medical reform measures such as improving the essential medical system, nurturing medical scientists, and preparing measures to support local medical systems.

He said, “With the desperate feeling that our people will have to bear the brunt of the damage after all the residents and students leave, we gathered together and prepared a mediation plan with the medical community.” He added, “Both the government and the medical community will discuss with the people’s lives and livelihoods at the center and come up with a reasonable solution.” “We have to find it,” he said.
