3 outs, 2 ins at MAN UTD
United are expected to part ways with three centre-backs this summer, with reports suggesting their places could be taken by a Premier League player rated at £80m and a Brazil international valued at £51m.
In recent months, United’s biggest weakness has been painfully clear for all to see. The Red Devils have been unable to keep opposing attacks quiet and have conceded 107 shots in their last four league encounters, none of which they have won.
It’s debatable where the real blame lies, but those at the heart of United’s defense are being put under a microscope.
Lisandro Martinez is Manchester United’s best centre-back, but his season was ruined by injury. Finding a long-term partner in Argentina is not only a priority for new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, but also brings exceptional strength to the position.
Jonny Evans and Raphael Varane are both out of contract at the end of the season. Varane’s contract includes a club option for a further year, but triggering that would see the declining Frenchman keep his £340,000-a-week wages.
According to journalist Rudy Galetti, Varane is now ‘out’. [the] plan’ Manchester United. That means he will be released at the end of the season.
However, according to Galetti, Harry Maguire will also leave the Red Devils along with Varane and Evans. “Another centre-back could be saying goodbye in June: Maguire,” the reporter said of X.
The Sun previously reported that West Ham will make a second attempt to sign Maguire in 2023 after failing to sign the England international.
The Hammers agreed a £30m deal with United, but Maguire reportedly refused to do so and negotiate a personal contract with West Ham.
But fast forward almost a year and United will be attempting to offload Maguire once again, according to Galetti. According to the reporter, United are ‘open to letting him go in the summer’.
With three centre-backs out, several additions are clearly needed.
