According to reports, Google Messages has finally started testing the ‘Edit Messages’ feature. The RCS-based messaging app has been rumored to be working on this feature since December 2023, when reports found some flags corresponding to message editing. Now, the feature is said to be rolling out to beta testers, who will be able to see and use it. This is also a sign that Google is in the final stages of rolling out this feature and that it will soon be available to all users around the world in the coming weeks.

According to a report from Phone Arena, the feature was discovered in message.android_20240506_04-RC00.phone.openbeta_dynamiccom.google.android.apps.messaging, the latest beta version of the Google Messages app. With this version, users enrolled in the Google Play Store beta program will now see the option to edit sent messages. However, there is one caveat. Currently, this feature only works if the message recipient is using the same beta version of the app.

If the user is not using the same beta version, their edits will not be visible on the recipient side. Tipster AssembleDebug also checked out this feature on X (formerly Twitter) and found that the edit time limit is 15 minutes. While consistent with WhatsApp’s editing time limit, a tipster claimed in February that the time limit could be 30 minutes.

Based on the shared screenshot, Google has added a new pencil icon that allows users to edit their messages. First, users need to long-press on the message they want to edit and then click on the pencil icon. This will open a new text box where the original message can be displayed and edited. Once you’re done, tap the check mark icon next to the box to confirm your edits and show them on the recipient’s end.

Specifically, Google also provides edit history so that all participants can see the original message. This also means that multiple edits can be made to the same message and users can see all the different versions. The tech giant is yet to confirm a global rollout schedule for the feature.
