Meta is known to be developing a unique wearable form factor using artificial intelligence (AI). These devices, called Camerabuds, are a pair of earphones with a camera attached to each end. The camera is said to collect information about its surroundings and answer the user’s questions. The report claims that the project is currently in its early stages and the company has not even finalized the design of the device. The engineering team also expressed some concerns about these wearables.

According to a report from The Information via Engadget, Meta is exploring new wearable devices that can use AI to identify objects and translate languages. The device is essentially a pair of earbuds or headphones, but with two cameras mounted on each outward-facing earbud. The camera collects information that will be processed in real time by AI to answer the wearer’s questions.

The device uses multimodal AI with real-time processing, similar to the company’s Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses ( review ). According to the information shared, Camerabuds will be a more portable device with a focus on two-way communication. It’s unclear whether verbal communication will be lag-free or the same as AI-powered smart glasses.

That’s the plan, but the report notes that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg isn’t satisfied with any of the designs so far, despite seeing several iterations. The engineering team also reportedly expressed several concerns about these devices. Concerns include battery life, heat dissipation, privacy concerns, and issues for users with long hair.

The report also noted that Meta had a history of planning and then abruptly stopping large-scale hardware projects. For example, the company discontinued its smart speaker project called Portal in 2022. Prior to this, the camera-equipped smartwatch project was also canceled. However, Meta has had significant success with its smart glasses and will likely want to double that with other similar products. In particular, we are investing heavily in the AI field.
