OpenAI, led by Sam Altman, said Wednesday that it has signed a deal that will give it access to content from some of the largest news publications owned by media conglomerate News Corp.

The deal comes just weeks after the Microsoft-backed AI giant signed a content licensing deal from the Financial Times to develop AI models.

Access to rich data can help improve the content generated by OpenAI’s ChatGPT, a chatbot that can generate human-like responses to prompts and generate long text summaries.

These partnerships are also important for training AI models and can be profitable for news publishers. News publishers have traditionally been denied a share of the revenue Internet giants earn from distributing their content.

OpenAI, which sparked the AI craze by launching a chatbot in 2022, also signed a content contract with social media platform Reddit last week.

OpenAI did not disclose financial details of the latest deal, but the News Corp-owned Wall Street Journal reported that it could be worth more than $250 million (about Rs. 2,080 crore) over five years.

According to a WSJ report, the partnership also includes a guarantee that content will not be available on ChatGPT immediately after it is published on one of the news websites.

The deal will give OpenAI access to current and archived content from several News Corp publications, including the Wall Street Journal, MarketWatch, the Times and others.

News Corp shares rose about 4% after the bell.
