This is director Nam Dong-hyeop’s comedy ‘Handsome Guys’, which will be released on the 26th of next month.
‘Handsome Guys’ is the story of Jae-pil (Lee Sung-min) and Sang-gu (Lee Hee-jun), who are like real brothers, as they experience strange things in a country house they bought as ‘young kkeul’.
The story unfolds with repeated twists and turns as the evil spirit sleeping in the basement awakens on a day when the two people are excited about their dream of living in the countryside and have a housewarming party.
At a production briefing held at a movie theater in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul on the 27th, Lee Seong-min said, “The character Jae-pil is fresh and I thought it could be a new challenge,” and “I also wanted to make a change (in my acting) myself.”
Jaepil is a character with bronze skin, a grim face with ponytails, and, unlike his harsh Gyeongsang dialect, he is shy. His partner, Sang-gu, has long hair and a sturdy physique, but his heart is kind and simple.
Although they are not good-looking to others, they are confident that they are handsome. In this respect, the film’s title takes on an ironic meaning.
Lee Sung-min said with a smile, “‘Handsome Guys’ would only have had actors like Jung Woo-sung or Kang Dong-won, but for me, it was a dilemma I had to overcome.” He added, “I interpreted ‘handsome’ in this movie to mean cool rather than handsome.”

The core of ‘Handsome Guys’ is Jaepil and Sanggu’s ‘Tiki Taka’. Lee Sung-min and Lee Hee-jun, who have worked together in ‘The Managers of Namsan’ (2020), ‘Drug King’ (2018), and ‘Robot, Sound’ (2016), show off their good acting chemistry in this work as well.
Lee Hee-jun predicted the two’s comical acting, saying, “I hope the audience comes to the theater prepared to laugh.”
‘Handsome Guys’ adds to the fun with the appearance of various characters, such as Mina (Gong Seung-yeon), a college student who comes to visit the countryside, police chief Choi (Park Ji-hwan), who watches Jae-pil and Sang-gu with suspicion, and his fellow police officer Nam (Lee Gyu-hyung).
Park Ji-hwan, who played gangster Jang Yi-su in ‘Crime City 4’, this time plays a police officer who makes mistakes and delivers a unique comical performance.
Park Ji-hwan described Director Choi’s character as “a person with a rich imagination,” and added, “As a result, he sees small things as big and magnifies and misunderstands big things.”
Despite her fragile appearance, Mina, played by Gong Seung-yeon, is a hot-tempered character who even spits out harsh curses in times of danger. Gong Seung-yeon said of her Mina, “She shows her dynamic emotional changes as she goes through various events in a short period of time.”
‘Handsome Guys’ is director Nam’s debut film. He built his directing experience as an assistant director on ‘High Society’ (2018), ‘Money Bag’ (2018), and ‘Movie Romance’ (2011).
Regarding the fact that ‘Handsome Guys’ has elements of horror as well as comedy, Director Nam said, “Because it is basically a comedy, I thought a lot about how to express the scenes where evil spirits appear.” “If it’s too light, it can be childish, so we tried to find a tone that suited our film,” he said.
‘Handsome Guys’ was produced by Hive Media Corp, the same company that produced ‘Spring in Seoul’.
