According to reports, Google Maps is making big changes to the way it stores location data. The report suggests that devices will soon be able to store location and timeline data locally (on-device) instead of Google Cloud. The company will also set the auto-delete feature to three months, which will automatically delete your timeline data after a certain period of time. Data older than that will be deleted, the report adds.

Save your map location on your device

According to a report in The Verge, the move is part of Google’s efforts to double down on its privacy measures. In an email to Google users, the company said they would have until December 1 to store location information, including places they’ve visited and trips they’ve taken, on their devices. After that, your old data will start deleting as per the report.

This reportedly includes location history, now known as Timeline. Google says Timeline is a “personal map” that helps people remember their routes and trips based on their location history. Users can edit and delete their timeline data. Going forward, all location data will now be bound locally to the device instead of Google Cloud.

The tech giant first announced this privacy-focused plan in December 2023. “If you’re one of the users who has chosen to turn on Location History (it’s off by default), your Timeline will soon be enabled,” the blog post said. It’s stored right on your device, giving you more control over your data. As before, you can delete all or part of your information at any time, or disable your settings completely.”

How to continue using Timeline

According to the report, Google said that to maintain location history, users will need to open Google Maps on their smartphones and tap on their profile picture in the top right corner. after that timeline Click on the section and set the features to: In ~.

Users can also choose how long they want Google to store their data, from 3 months to 3 years. Alternatively, you can toggle the manual deletion option, which retains timeline data until you manually remove it.
