Qualcomm is reportedly collaborating with Reliance Jio to launch 5G-enabled smartphones in the Indian market. Reliance Jio has been very aggressive in 5G adoption. The company has almost completed the rollout of 5G technology in the country. However, there are many 2G users in the country who want to switch to 5G networks. This is where Qualcomm plans to collaborate with Jio. The US-based chipmaker is reportedly set to launch a new chipset to enable the launch of entry-level 5G smartphones in the country.

According to a report in Moneycontrol, Qualcomm is planning to collaborate with Jio to launch an entry-level 5G smartphone, which will be priced under $99 (approximately Rs. 8,200). The report added that low-cost 5G handsets could be launched by the end of 2024.

Qualcomm is also reportedly working with various original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to develop this entry-level smartphone. The report further added that the smartphone will support the 5G standalone architecture that Jio is offering with its network.

The report also mentions that entry-level 5G handsets could be powered by low-cost custom processors using the SA-2Rx feature. The new chipset will reportedly provide a full 5G experience to those looking for an affordable smartphone in the country. “This product is inspired by India. We are very focused on the transition from 4G to 5G. So we need a way to make the transition as seamless as possible and deliver truly optimized products to handset developers, carriers and end consumers,” said Chris Patrick, SVP and general manager of handsets at Qualcomm. he told the publication.

Qualcomm wants to launch this chipset to encourage 2G users in the country to switch to 5G networks. The company said its Indian research and development department worked hard to develop this new chipset. The move will help bring 5G networks to around 2.8 billion people across the world, including in India.

This will surely lead to a surge in 5G adoption in India. However, it will be interesting to watch the prices of new low-cost 5G smartphones from Qualcomm and Reliance Jio. The entry-level smartphone segment currently starts at around Rs. 7,000, but currently there are no phones offering 5G services in this price range. Get the 5G handset for less than Rs. 8,000 price range can change the market scenario in the country and help users switch from 2G enabled feature phones to smartphones.
