According to the report, Android 15 will allow third-party apps to offer improved quality in terms of video stabilization. The code of Google’s upcoming Android operating system will feature a new ‘extension’ that the company says will allow alternative camera apps downloaded from the Play Store to access the same algorithms used by the default (or “default”) camera app on a user’s smartphone. ‘ suggests that ‘ could be introduced. In the next few months. Manufacturers may choose to enable this feature, but Google may also offer a software-based alternative to access these advanced camera features.

Android Authority discovered a new Camera2 extension called ‘Eyes Free videography’ in the code for Android 15 from the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). The Camera2 extension allows third-party camera apps to access the algorithms available in the manufacturer’s camera app. Google is reportedly offering access to five extensions – Auto, Bokeh, Face retouch, HDR, and Night – on several smartphones running Android 14.

The new Eyes Free Video Camera2 extension in Android 15 “aims to lock on and stabilize specific areas or objects of interest,” according to a description of the feature found in the publication. While the previously mentioned extensions are related to image capture, the new extension is designed to improve video stabilization in third-party camera apps.

It’s worth noting that OEMs still need to implement the new Camera2 extension for Android 15. Some manufacturers have reportedly enabled access to one or more of the five extensions available in Android 14. However, according to the report, in Android 15, the new “Allow Camera Software Extensions” toggle is designed to provide a software implementation of the feature that, while not optimized, can allow third-party camera apps to access extensions and provide improved video quality.

Google is expected to release Android 15 on its Pixel smartphones later this year, and the next-generation operating system will include lock screen widgets, privacy features aimed at hiding sensitive details while the screen is being recorded, and a new ‘app isolation’. Added features, ‘Private Space’ to hide apps, and many other new features. Some of these are currently accessible in the latest Android 15 public beta release, while others may be enabled by the company once the stable version is released later this year.
