Google will soon stop providing Chrome browser updates to several smartphones running older versions of the Android operating system. The company will also stop updating the Google Calendar app on these phones. If you have an older smartphone and want to continue receiving updates to the company’s browser and calendar apps (which usually add new features or security-related fixes), you’ll need to update your smartphone to the latest Android version or buy a new phone.

According to 9to5Google’s recently updated Google Chrome browser support article, the search giant is expected to drop support for Chrome on devices running Android 7.1 (Nougat) and earlier versions starting from version 120. The support page states that “Chrome 120 does not support or ship to users running Android Nougat.”

Google said Chrome 119 also includes a message asking users of older smartphones to update to the latest version of Android. This means that if your smartphone isn’t running Android 8 (Oreo) or newer, you won’t be able to get the Chrome 120 update. This is expected to affect approximately 8% of Android smartphone owners using Android Nougat and earlier. , according to Android usage statistics shown in June.

The minimum version supported by Google Chrome has been increased to Android 8, so sideloading APKs for Google Chrome 120 and higher will not work on Android 7 and lower. If you’ve been putting off updating your phone to the latest version, you’ll need to download and install it to continue receiving updates. Suitable for most users with older smartphones and no pending Android OS updates.

Meanwhile, TheSpAndroid reports that Google is preparing a message for Google Calendar users running on Android 7.1 and earlier releases, informing them that support for the Android version has been discontinued and asking them to update to the latest version of Google’s operating system. As a result, according to the report, users will not be able to use Google Calendar 2023-46-0-581792699 and later versions.
