Google and Samsung have set the bar high for Android phones by announcing up to the seventh-generation Android upgrade for the Pixel 8 and Galaxy S24 series. Apple typically doesn’t disclose how many software updates iPhones get, but it is known to provide long-term software support for its phones. Thanks to new regulations in the UK, Apple has finally specified a minimum support period for the iPhone 15 family, which is less than what Google and Samsung currently offer.

Minimum software support period for iPhone 15 Pro Max

As spotted by Android Authority’s Mishaal Rahman, Apple recently uploaded a new document to its website that complies with the UK’s Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure (PSTI). In the document, Apple says it will provide security updates for the latest iPhone 15 Pro Max for at least five years. The ‘defined period of support’ is ‘at least 5 years from the date of first supply’. The ‘first supply date’ was listed as September 22, 2023. This period is two years shorter than that of major competitors.

PSTI defines a “security update” as “a software update that protects or enhances the security of a product, including software updates that address security issues discovered or reported to the manufacturer.” Based on this, we can expect Apple to support some devices for longer.

Previously, the Cupertino giant provided more than five years of updates for some of its models. The iPhone XS, released in September 2018, is still compatible with iOS 17. This guaranteed software support period may change with the launch of the iPhone 16 series this fall.

On the other hand, Samsung and Google currently guarantee at least 24 years of Android system and security updates for the latest Galaxy S7 trio and Pixel 8 series, respectively.
